Bar Cottini
About This Spot
Stepping into Bar Cottini on Via Merulana feels like slipping into a quietly cherished corner of Rome where time slows and familiar rhythms take over. This intimate spot hums with the gentle flow of locals—friends catching up over espresso, the clink of glasses during a relaxed afternoon aperitivo, and the murmur of casual conversations that mingle with the soft sounds of the street outside.
Here, the pace is unhurried and warm, a true reflection of Roman life away from the bustling tourist routes. It’s the kind of place where mornings begin with the rich aroma of freshly brewed espresso paired with buttery pastries filled with unexpected delights, like pistachio or creamy custard, inviting small moments of pleasure. By evening, the atmosphere shifts subtly; the bar’s selection of aperitifs, sparkling spritzes, and balanced plates create a convivial backdrop for winding down, whether you’re savoring traditional carbonara or sharing a slice of perfectly crisp pizza.
What makes Bar Cottini quietly special is its genuine sense of community. It’s a meeting point for locals who seem to appreciate the no-frills charm and attentiveness of the staff, whose friendly smiles and helpfulness make visitors feel easily at home. Coffee here isn’t just a drink, it’s a shared moment, a ritual passed between bar and patron — just as the view of the nearby Basilica adds a subtle reminder of the city’s layered history.
Whether you find yourself here for a quick morning pick-me-up, a leisurely meal, or simply to soak in everyday Roman life, Bar Cottini offers a snapshot of the city’s warm, unpretentious spirit. It feels less like a stop on a map and more like a quietly kept secret where genuine human moments unfold naturally.

I had a spicy salami sandwich, which was ok but nothing special. The fries were the real star of the show. Hot, crispy, and cooked just right. The service was good. Overall, it was a decent experience. I would recommend and return. Enjoy!

I don’t understand why this cafe is so underrated. I went there twice (because I had a good first impression) and my experience was always great. This place is simply authentic - I met there locals, which are just spending there their free time. I felt really Italian drinking espresso at the bar. The staff is amazing, nice and helpful to everyone. I was also shocked that when I ordered the gelato, I could choose two flavors for 3 euro. I hope I will come back! Cottini was a part of my trip to Rome - the the archetype of the Italian café

Very good pastry shop, everything very fresh. Very friendly staff. A very pleasant breakfast with a view of the Basilica.

Disclaimer: only had pastries and coffee here. Food; desserts are delicious, but all desserts in Europe are. Service: we sat and they brought our coffee and pastries so they did their job. Atmosphere: cute, small and a quick stop. First time in Europe? They charge to sit at a table. Just FYI.

First time in Rome, and had a lovely meal. Kind and attentive staff, who spoke perfect English (I only know a few words of Italian). Food was first class, much better pizza and Lasagne than you tend to get in the UK. Price was very good, portion sizes were enough for a big eater (all in all, a lot cheaper, better tasting than the equivalent would be in the UK).
